Program: Welcome Back!

Instead of our traditional format, we will be extending our social time with some fun activities. After a short business meeting we will finish up with a presentation from our favorite presenter, Dawn Standke.

Program: Growing Gardeners

Speakers: “Farmer Roy” Wilburn, Reinhold Mueller & Bob Lutticken
Fellow PVGC members (and past club Presidents), “Farmer Roy” Wilburn &
Reinhold Mueller, with Bob Lutticken, director of the national award-winning
Abraxas Garden, share their expertise in growing plants from seeds. Their

lessons apply to your own garden, just as they are helping our school district gardens with plant “starts,” also grown from seeds. They will describe the exciting developments at Abraxas Garden, which include an expanded orchard and a new greenhouse for growing starts from seeds to share with school gardens for students to plant, nurture and enjoy.

Program: Herbs of Thanksgiving
Speakers: Karen England

Although any herb can be used at Thanksgiving, Karen will be discussing herbs you can grow that will make you grateful this Thanksgiving. She has been an herb gardener for over 30 years and is on the board of directors of the International Herb association and a regular food and drinks contributor to the group’s Herb of the Year books. Karen was the culinary docent at the Lavender Fields of Valley Center and wrote and published their branded Lavender Cooking booklets. Karen, who lives and gardens on 2 acres in Vista, self-published a still popular booklet (now a PDF) entitled Scented GeraniYums! Cooking with Scented Pelargoniums.

In keeping with holiday tradition at PVGC, we will also have our very popular White Elephant Silent Auction! Please scour your attic and garage to find slightly used (or still in the package) treasures that club members can bid on for the Silent Auction!

Speaker: Ruth Tiffany

Ruth Tiffany is a Master Rosarian and is an award-winning rose exhibitor. She exhibits her roses each year in many rose shows, including the San Diego County Fair. Ruth moved to her current home in the San Carlos neighborhood in 2002 where she has planted and maintains a stunning rose garden with more than 500 rose plants on a 7,000-foot lot.

Lucy Warren is a San Diego-based Master Gardener, writer and speaker known for encouraging vibrant, sustainable gardens that celebrate California’s native plants. With a deep appreciation for the region’s unique eco- systems, she promotes outdoor spaces that thrive in Southern California’s climate while supporting local biodiversity.

Fred Clarke is the general manager of the Carlsbad Flower Fields (where we will be “field tripping” this month. Fred will share the story behind the colorful carpet of blooms signaling the arrival of Spring. Learn what’s behind those perfect blooms before you see them up close. What does it take to get from bulbs to bouquets? Can I get them to grow in my yard?

Speaker: Representative from I Love a Clean San Diego
We welcome an enthusiastic speaker from I Love a Clean San Diego (ILACSD), the non-profit organization encouraging zero-waste lifestyles and zero litter throughout San Diego County, thereby improving our soil and water. ILACSD provides environmental education, volunteer clean-up and beautification programs, and recycling and zero-waste solutions. ILACSD seeks to empower everyone to lead in conservation and waste-free living to protect and improve our beloved San Diego.
